Shetland Ponies

Thimbleby & Shorland have been conducting sales of Shetland ponies at Reading Livestock Market since October 1968 when some local breeders requested the firm to hold a sale as the only other venue at that time was in Aberdeen.

The first sale created a lot of interest and the prices were very good. So good in fact that the trade for ponies throughout the country is set at the Reading Sale every year. As Reading is so central and so close to the main transport hubs, buyers from all over the world have attended and purchased at the sales. The main overseas buyers come from Holland, Belgium, Germany and France but in the past buyers from as far afield at the USA have attended, purchased and exported ponies from Reading.

Again because of demand, Thimbleby & Shorland started an annual spring sale in 1993 and this sale has grown in strength ever since.

At the 40th sale in October 2008, over 210 ponies were entered from every part of the country with 21 ponies being exported to Europe and other buyers from the four corners of the country.

Thimbleby & Shorland support Shetland classes at many local and National shows as well as an involvement with local Shetland Breeders Groups.
